#Interview with Tara Kingston

Today on the blog I’m honored to have Tara Kingston stopping by. Her newest book When a Lady Dares released May 22nd from Entangled: Select Historical. Before we get to her interview, let me share with you about her book.

Sophie Atherton knows a liar when she sees one. Perhaps because she’s so skilled at deception herself. Searching for clues to a string of mysterious deaths, the secret operative for the Crown has connived her way into a phony medium’s confidence. When a dashing archaeologist seeks out the charlatan’s services, Sophie suspects he’s after more than a long-lost heirloom. Their electric attraction storms her defenses, but loving the rakish scholar would threaten her investigation and the life she’s crafted.

Gavin Stanwyck is a man on a mission. Masquerading as a treasure hunter to trap the spiritualist, he’s drawn to the medium’s enigmatic assistant. As treacherous forces close in, passion awakens his hardened heart—he’ll protect Sophie at all costs, but he cannot give her his love. Uniting to survive a sinister plot, they must tear down their defenses and learn to trust their hearts.

Thank you for inviting me to your blog. It’s a pleasure to discuss writing with you.

  1. What inspired you to become an author?

Since I was a child, I loved the sense of being transported to another place and time, learning exciting new facts, or experiencing the adventures of a beloved character—all possible through the wonder of reading. My mother and grandmother actively encouraged me to devour children’s novels such as Nancy Drew mysteries. Reading those stories as a young girl inspired me to think of my own stories, and by the time I was in third grade, I was creating my own stories on an old typewriter. I never gave up on the dream of becoming an author, so I was thrilled when my first book was published.

  1. If you had a theme song, what would it be?

It’s a tie between three songs, depending on my mood:

Paperback Writer (The Beatles)

Don’t Stop (Fleetwood Mac)

Roar (Katy Perry)

  1. What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

When I’m not writing, I’m eager to be outdoors. My husband and I enjoy long bike rides, hikes through the woods, and lazy beach days. I’m also a football fan, and I’m a movie buff who loves comedies and adventures. However, I detest sad movies. No tearjerkers for me!

  1. Where did your inspiration for When a Lady Dares come from?

Sophie Atherton, the heroine in When A Lady Dares, first appeared in When A Lady Deceives, as the assistant to the heroine of that story, investigative journalist Jennie Quinn. Her character was so much fun to write that I really wanted to give Sophie her own story. The novel is set in the late Victorian era, around 1890, a time when many people were interested in séances and spiritualism. I thought it would be interesting to have Sophie investigate a phony medium. In the story, Sophie goes undercover as a psychic’s assistant in order to investigate a series of mysterious deaths of interest to the Crown. Sophie’s investigation brings her into conflict with Gavin Stanwyck, a dashing archaeologist who’s got secrets of his own.

  1. What’s up next for you?

I’ve recently completed a Scottish Victorian historical romance, For the Highlander’s Eyes Only, the next book in the Highland Heart series. I’m spending some time working on some furniture painting that I’ve been putting off while I finished the book and enjoying a bit of travel with my husband now that the weather is warm. On the writing front, I’m diving into the next book in my Her Majesty’s Most Secret Service series. When A Lady Desires is going to be a suspense-filled Victorian romance that will see the hero and heroine become enmeshed in a mystery that takes them from London to the pyramids of Egypt.
