Winter in Mississippi

So far this winter has been the weirdest we have seen in Mississippi in a while. Since the prompt for this month’s Blog All About It challenge is winter, I thought I would share what winter has been like the past couple of weeks.

Typically here in Mississippi, we don’t get a lot of snow. We normally get ice and when we do get anything it isn’t much and it is normally in March right before spring actually starts. When we do get anything, everyone freaks out and runs to the store for bread and water and it’s chaotic to say the least. Oh and everything pretty much shuts down since no one knows how to drive on a normal day let alone on an icy one.

On January 12th, we got a lot of ice that caused the roads to be extremely hazardous so naturally everyone freaked out. I didn’t leave my house that day. I didn’t want to chance wrecking even though I can drive pretty well in those conditions thanks to my dad teaching me how to properly drive on ice. This was the view from my front porch.

The following Tuesday we got hit again but this time it was 3 inches of snow. The roads were again pretty bad because part of them had never unfrozen and then everyone driving on them packed the snow down and caused ice. I took my daughter over to my parent’s house that day and let her play in the snow since we don’t have a yard.

To say she loved it would probably be an understatement. I had a hard time getting her to come back in even though she was obviously pretty cold. This is the first time in a while that we’ve had enough snow to play in and it stuck around for a couple of days since the temp. didn’t get above freezing.

I used to think that I hated winter and although I hate being cold, I rather enjoyed actually getting snow and going outside to play in it. I did not like the ice though. I ended up falling one morning on my way to the car and banged up my knee pretty good.

Do you like winter? How has yours been so far?

Not a fan of winter! It has been freezing here in New England!

    • I definitely couldn’t handle a winter there!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  • Winter is my least favorite of the seasons, but I try to make the best of it. My winter, so far, has been colder than normal but personally, I’m faring better than I have in previous winters.

I envy children and their enthusiasm for snow. I loved playing in the snow as a kid and there’s a part of me that misses it. I kind of wish I knew how to ski so I could continue to “play.”

  • Yes, its been a weird year for winter weather. So glad you could enjoy the snow. I’m with you on hating the ice. I’ve had spinouts in my car and fallen on the ice a few times.

I don’t mind snow as much as sub-arctic temps. We had some ice that didn’t melt for about a week but luckily most of it hit on a Saturday and I didn’t have to go anywhere. So glad your daughter got to enjoy the snow.

  • I hate Winter, post Christmastime… Although I do love the sight of my kid playing in the snow. 🙂

  • Everyone has been attacked by the winter bug. I’m used to it living here in Michigan…but I feel bad for you guys who are supposed to be our get-aways 😉

  • My winter has been pretty good so far. It’s odd seeing people in southern states having snow pictures to share!

My daughter would love it if we got snow, but that’s not very likely. If we did, it wouldn’t stick at all. The weather has just been so crazy for much of the world as of late.
