BETTING THE BAD BOY

Behind the Bar #3

Stefanie London

Releasing May 8th, 2017

Entangled Lovestruck

Self-confessed perfectionist Paige Thomas isn’t used to failing. But when a critical error in romantic judgment sends all her big city career dreams crashing down, she scrambles to find a job—any job—to make ends meet.

Noah Reid may as well have “trust issues” tattooed on his forehead. Being raised in the foster system didn’t give him a positive outlook on relationships, but now he’s looking after his best friend’s bar for one month, and he can’t do it alone.

Things get steamy when Noah hires Paige, but she’s determined not to repeat her mistakes and she bets Noah that she can keep her hands to herself while they’re working together. Too bad for her, Noah is an expert at breaking the rules…

Betting the Bad Boy is Book 3 in the Behind the Bar series but it can be read as a standalone.
Romance cost Paige her dream job and now she is looking for any job at all so she doesn’t have to move back home. When she meets Noah she is determined to not make the same mistake twice. When sparks fly between them, they make a bet that she can keep her hands to herself while they work together. But Noah likes to break the rules.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters! Paige was so down on her luck at the beginning and I can relate to that. I enjoyed watching her luck turn around and the banter between her and Noah kept me intrigued. Now I want to read the other two books in this series!

Interview

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

100% it’s the banter. Writing dialogue is always my favourite part of any book, but in particular I loved it in Betting the Bad Boy because there’s so much back and forth between Paige and Noah. He loves to wind her up and she does her best not to let him have the upper hand, which results in some really snappy, flirty and fun conversations. There are plenty of jokes, one-liners and great teasing. I had a blast writing it!

What gave you the most trouble with this story?

I always end up re-doing the ending of a book in some way. I think it’s such an important part of the story, because what happens after the black moment (aka the ‘all is lost’ moment) is what really gives readers the warm and fuzzy feeling that draws them to the romance genre. Which means the ending needs to fit the characters and their growth. I love how Betting the Bad Boy ended, but it didn’t come out that way in the first draft. It took some brainstorming and a few re-writes to get there.

Name three things on your desk right now:

A cup of coffee, my stuffed llama (my writing mascot, Romance Llama) and an essential oil diffuser.

A la Twitter style, please describe your book in 140 characters or less:

A good girl from the country, a bad boy from the city and a kissing bet to turn up the heat!

What are you favorite types of stories to read?

I’m a really broad reader. I love contemporary romance and romantic comedies, erotic romance, YA (especially fantasy and dystopian), anything post-apocalyptic (especially zombies!), crime and thrillers, mysteries, general commercial fiction, non fiction…the list goes on. Variety is the spice of life, as they say!

What 5 things should readers know about you?

1. I was born in Australia and, even though I live in Canada now, I still love my Tim Tams, Flat Whites, Lamingtons, Freddo Frogs and Caramello Koalas…but I hate Vegemite.
2. I love llamas. I have a little collection of stuffed llamas, one in particular that comes to conferences with me and always sits at my table whenever I’m signing books.
3. Because of fact #2, The Emperor’s New Groove is one of my all-time favourite movies.
4. Game of Thrones is the only TV show that I’ve watched every episode of while it was still airing.
5. I love hearing from readers! Interacting with people who love romance novels if one of the best parts of being an author, so if you ever want to catch me on social media or email to say hi, please do so.

How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start?

I started writing in late 2012, although I have wanted to be a writer ever since I was a little girl. When I told my family that I was thinking of writing a romance novel, I got overwhelming support. My mum even went to our local charity shop and bought me a stack of Mills & Boon (Harlequin) books so I could get some inspiration.

I think I wanted to be a writer because of Agatha Christie, RL Stine, Ann M Martin and Francine Pascal. The Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley books dominated my childhood, and I moved on to Fear Street and Agatha Christies mysteries as I got older. These authors were the ones who made me rush to the bookstore after school with my pocket money in hand.

Stefanie London is the USA Today bestselling author of over ten contemporary romances with humour, heat and heart. As the co-owner of Bayside Resorts, Rick Savage has a fabulous job working with his best friends and brother, and a thriving business in Washington, DC, which he’ll be returning to at the end of the summer. Spending time with his family is great, but being back on Cape Cod has unearthed painful memories. When sweet, smart, and overly cautious Desiree Cleary moves in next door, Rick is drawn to the sexy preschool teacher, and she just might prove to be the perfect distraction.

Running an art gallery was not in preschool teacher Desiree Cleary’s plans, but after being tricked into coming to her impetuous, unreliable mother’s aid, she’s stuck spending the summer with the badass half sister she barely knows and a misbehaving dog. If that’s not frustrating enough, she can’t escape the sparks igniting with her strikingly handsome and pushy neighbor, Rick, who makes all her warning bells go off.

Passion ignites as Desiree and Rick spend long summer nights sharing heartfelt confessions and steamy kisses. For the first time in years Rick is enjoying life again instead of hiding behind mounds of work miles away from his family. Desiree has touched him in a way that makes him want to slow down. Only slowing down means dealing with his demons, and he isn’t sure who he’ll be when he comes out the other side.

Rick looks like he has it all but having everything doesn’t fill the void in his life. Desiree is a preschool teacher who never wanted to run an art gallery but circumstances changed. These two meet and the passion they share is almost magi
Bayside Desires is book 1 in the Bayside Summers series. I was super excited to see Melissa Foster is starting a new series. I was even more excited to find out that it is also part of her bigger Love in Bloom series as well. I love that all of the books in this series feature cameos from other books/series. Melissa Foster is so good at giving her characters life and a purpose beyond the book they are featured in.

The matchmaker meets her match…in one very persistent tycoon!

Secretive matchmaker to the rich and famous, Lydia Whitney prefers to stay behind the scenes. But after one mistake, rich resort developer Ian McNeill is hot on her trail, and he’s more attractive—and persistent—than ever before.

Ian can’t believe it when he figures out who’s messing with his family: a woman who has deceived—and seduced—him before. What’s her agenda? And why can’t he resist her? He’ll get the answers to all his questions, if Lydia agrees to his convenient marriage proposal. But once she’s in his arms again, will he let her go?

The Magnate’s Marriage Merger is the second book in the McNeill Magnates series. It’s a second chance romance about Ian and Lydia. Lydia is a matchmaker with a secret identity. Ian is shocked to find out his ex is the one who caused his family problems. When he finds out the truth, he suggests a marriage of convenience and Lydia accepts to prevent a scandal. But after they are married, things heat up. Feelings are rekindled and what was a sham marriage doesn’t feel so fake anymore.
I really enjoyed this book. It is a great continuation of this series. The characters are well developed and enjoyed seeing their romance rekindled. Joanne Rock has a way with words and I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Gage…

I don’t fuck girls who work for me, but as soon as Amelia turns those big green eyes on me I know she’s trouble. I can’t keep my hands off her, and the almost-but-not-quite-sex we share in the kitchen is the hottest thing I’ve ever had. Except she calls it quits, before we’ve even started.

Instead of moving on, she’s all I can think about and that’s bad news. I’m breaking all my rules for her, and don’t even care.

Until I find out who she is and what she really wants. She’s after payback, but there’s no way she’s going to get it. No way in hell…

Get HOOKED on the Viking Bastards MC

I trace the outline of her ear and those three irresistible hoops. She gives a little shiver but still doesn’t grab hold of me. Guess it’s time to ease her mind on things.

I move in closer, and she steps back until she’s flat against the larder door.

“What happens between us tonight doesn’t affect your job. You understand?”

“You mean if I knee your nuts, you won’t fire me?”

Instinctively, I cradle my junk. “That wasn’t my first thought.”

Her smile damn near takes my breath away. “I bet it wasn’t. I know exactly what you’re thinking.”

“Is that right?” I’m sure my package is safe so I twist a length of her hair around my finger. It’s as soft and silky as I imagined. “What’s that, then?”

“I think you’re trying to get inside my thong.”

The image of Amelia in nothing but a sexy thong fills my head. “You got a problem with that?”

“Yeah. It’s not happening.”

My gaze drops to her mouth. “Wanna bet?”

“I don’t need to bet. I’m telling you. All you get tonight is a kiss.”

Chicks don’t lay down the law to me. But then again, I’ve never been with a girl who confuses me as much as Amelia. If she wants to leave, she could easily walk away. I won’t stop her. But she stands there, like she’s daring me to take me up on her offer.

A kiss.

I give her a mocking smile. “You’ll want more than a kiss from me.”

She doesn’t answer right away, and I hide my smirk of victory as I lean in to claim her mouth. Her head tilts to the side, evading me, which is both frustrating and oddly fascinating.

“It doesn’t matter what I want. A kiss is my best offer. Take it or leave it.”

Despite the throb between my legs, I have the crazy urge to laugh. “That’s your best offer? You sure you don’t want me to go down on you?”

For a second I swear she’s about say yes, but then she hitches in a ragged breath. “Totally sure. Keep your head right where it is.”

No chick has ever refused that offer before, and the way she’s so desperately trying to hide how turned on she is makes me grin. “Okay. But I’ll only kiss you on one condition.”

“Huh?” She sounds drunk, and blinks at me like everything’s out of focus. “You have a condition?”

“It’s only fair.”

She stares at me as though I’ve lost my mind. I think I fucking have. Not that I care, since crazy as this all is, I’ve never had as much fun hooking up before.

Finally, she speaks. “What is it?”

“I can use my hands on you.” I wave my fingers in her face and she glances at them as though she has no idea what I’m talking about.

“Okay.” There’s a cautious note in her voice as though she thinks it’s some kind of trick. “But that’s all. Just your hands.”

That’s all I need.

Two lonely hearts.

Just once, she’d like to be someone’s first choice.

She’s strong-willed and spunky, but she’s left picking up the pieces from her ex’s lies and manipulations, and daydreaming about taking a scalpel to his scrotum.

Flying under the radar is what he does best.

He’s laid-back and loyal, but he wants the most off-limits woman in his world, and nothing will ever make that a reality.

An arrangement of mutual benefit.

Two months, four dates.

Five, if things go well.

Five at the most.

But possibly six.

Definitely no more than six dates.

Only the appearance of a romantic relationship is required, and they expect nothing more from their time together. There will be none of those benefits involved.

One wild weekend.

After waking up in bed together—very naked and even more hungover—the terms and conditions of their arrangement no longer apply. Now they’re faced with something riskier than exposing their fake relationship: letting go of the past and zipping up the future.

Some things have to fall apart before they can be put back together.

PRESERVATION excerpt – © 2017, Kate Canterbary

Riley pointed at the plate between us. “These are my favorite pretzel bites in the city. Try some.”

I shot him a sharp look.

“Are you just trying to get me in a good mood?” I asked. “I did eat lunch today.”

“Oh yeah?” he asked, dipping two pretzels in the accompanying sauce. “What did you have?

Based on you yelling at me about noticing your shoes, I’d say it was an iced venti skinny latte.”

“Almonds,” I replied. And an iced venti skinny latte but I wasn’t copping to that just yet.

Riley tried to fight a laugh, and failed. “Almonds?” he repeated.

“Chocolate covered almonds, yes.” I folded my arms across my chest. “It was an appropriate amount of calories, fat, protein, and carbs.”

He shook his head and ate another pretzel. “I don’t want to live in a world where a few almonds—chocolate or otherwise—are lunch.” He pointed to the plate and pushed his beer toward me. “Eat. Drink. Please.”

I glared at the pilsner and pretzels. I hated being told what to do. Just fucking hated it. But then my stomach growled—goddamn it—and Riley shot me a pointed glance.

“People think that a rumbling stomach is the sign of hunger,” I said, reaching for his glass. I drained the beer and then selected a pretzel for dipping. “It is not.”

Riley gazed at me, his expression flat. It gave me a moment to study him while choosing another pretzel. He was wearing jeans, a tailored shirt with the cuffs rolled up to his elbows, and a pinstriped vest, and his hair was a wreck. It looked like he’d been tugging the dark strands in every conceivable direction. His eyes were rimmed with a bit of red and his lids heavy, as if he’d been rubbing them or hadn’t gotten much sleep. Perhaps both. There was a small notebook beside his phone, and a mechanical pencil tucked into the spiral binding.

And he was still more attractive than I knew how to handle. Even tired and irritable, and ordering me to eat his pretzels and drink his beer, he was hot as fuck. I bit into another pretzel and offered him a small smile.

“Would you say the chip on your shoulder is massive or epic?” he asked. There was no hint of amusement in his tone, and he was staring at me with more ice than I’d believed he could muster. It didn’t feel like we were sniping at each other anymore.

“It might be semantics to you but I’m trying to get a feel for what I’m dealing with here.”

But then one of his big hands found my leg under the table. He squeezed and rubbed his thumb along the hollow of my knee, and I started to believe I’d been all wrong about this man.

There was the player and there was the overgrown kid, but there was so much more than that.

Kate Canterbary doesn’t have it all figured out, but this is what she knows for sure: spicy-ass salsa and tequila solve most problems, living on the ocean–Pacific or Atlantic–is the closest place to perfection, and writing smart, smutty stories is a better than any amount of chocolate. She started out reporting for an indie arts and entertainment newspaper back when people still read newspapers, and she has been writing and surreptitiously interviewing people—be careful sitting down next to her on an airplane—ever since. Kate lives on the water in New England with Mr. Canterbary and the Little Baby Canterbary, and when she isn’t writing sexy architects, she’s scheduling her days around the region’s best food trucks.

From an early age, USA Today Bestselling author Melissa Schroeder loved to read. First, it was the books her mother read to her including her two favorites, Winnie the Pooh and the Beatrix Potter books. She cut her preteen teeth on Trixie Belden and read and reviewed To Kill a Mockingbird in middle school. It wasn’t until she was in college that she tried to write her first stories, which were full of angst and pain, and really not that fun to read or write. After trying several different genres, she found romance in a Linda Howard book.

Since her first published book , Mel has had over 60 short stories, novellas, and novels published. She has written in genres ranging from historical to contemporary to futuristic and has worked with 8 publishers although she handles most of her publishing herself. Senna hasn’t seen her ex-boss Marco since their one night stand. She’s tried to get in touch with him but he always ignores her. After a year of this, he sweeps back into her life revealing he knows her secret. He wants to be there for his son but he has no plans for his future that involve Senna. He is supposed to have an arranged marriage but will he be able to go through with it?

I was beyond frustrated with Marco and his attitude towards Senna. Maybe it’s because I was a single mom for a little while, but I wanted to slap Senna and tell her to stand up for herself. At the same time, I got why she didn’t but she deserved for Marco to at least consider planning a future with her long before he realized she might be what he wants. Overall I did enjoy the story and wanted to find out what happened. It kept me entertained for sure.
